My Summer Internship!
Posted Mar 29 2007 by Amanda | Filed under AnnouncementsYesterday, at my interview, the company that I’ve wanted to intern with offered me a summer position. Yay! So, what does this mean for you? It means that now I can finalize my own summer schedule and develop an availability calendar for everyone interested in my exclusive Summer Workshops. I will be working at the agency two days out of each week in June, July, and half of August. If anyone has a weekday preference, now is the time to e-mail me with that information. Once I tell the agency which days I want to work for them, that’s final. So, let me know if there’s a specific day or time you want, and I’ll do my best to accomodate that before I make my other plans. More Summer Workshop details will be coming soon, so check back when you can.
Also, don’t be afraid to IM me or e-mail, even if it’s just to say hi. I really love hearing people’s questions and responses, so don’t hesitate to get in touch. I made this site into an open forum for a reason. Talk to you all soon!
Writing Tip #2
Posted Mar 26 2007 by Amanda | Filed under Writing TipsIf you’re writing an essay during the SAT Writing Exam and you’re discussing something that happened in your own life, it’s OK to elaborate, exaggerate, and modify. During the SAT test, if you’re writing a reflection, an opinion piece, or a personal essay with YOU as the subject, you don’t have to stick to the cold, hard facts. People often worry during the SAT exam that they shouldn’t “make stuff up” about their feelings or experiences. I mean, don’t tell the graders that you are Paris Hilton or Hugh Hefner, but do embellish you own story if it adds to your piece. On the SAT Writing Exam, if you want to talk about how your grandmother taught you how to build igloos or about how you can juggle live lobsters, you can do that. Even if it isn’t necessarily true.
NOTE: This does not apply to cover letters, resumes, bios, or interview materials. Never elaborate your background for a potential employer. If you have questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask.
Summer Workshop in Worcester, MA
Posted Mar 21 2007 by Amanda | Filed under AnnouncementsI wanted to let all the Worcester-area students out there know that I am considering bringing my weekly Summer Workshop class to your area starting in June. If there’s a considerable amount of interest, I will gladly come to Grafton, Shrewsbury, Westborough, Worcester, or one of the surrounding towns to meet with a group once a week during the summer. E-mail or IM me anytime if this is something you might want to do. Also, be on the lookout for flyers in your area soon.
Referral Rewards
Posted Mar 19 2007 by Amanda | Filed under AnnouncementsI just want to let everyone know that in addition to all the services you see to the left, I am setting up an informal referral rewards program. Since Editing by Amanda is new and still growing, there’s something in it for you if you refer this site to the right people. For every unique client you get to sign on and work with me, you receive $5. So, if 20 people sign up and say that you told them about Editing by Amanda, you get $100. It’s a good deal, and everyone’s happy. So, spread the word and keep checking back for more updates.
EbA Summer Workshop Information
Posted Mar 18 2007 by Amanda | Filed under AnnouncementsCheck out the Summer Workshops page to find some information about the exclusive workshop courses I’m offering this summer. I don’t have the calendar of available time slots and dates yet, but check back often so that when it’s up, you can snag the spots you want. I have very limited enrollment availability due to my busy summer schedule, but I want to have the opportunity to work with as many students as possible. E-mail me at amanda@editingbyamanda.com if you have time/date preferences and I’ll give you guys more info once I have it. This summer is going to be fun and stimulating–and it’s almost here. Get ready and see you soon.
Writing Tip #1
Posted Mar 16 2007 by Amanda | Filed under Writing TipsThere is a BIG difference between “your” and “you’re.” “Your” is possessive, which means it pretty much always comes before a noun (i.e. “your face”). “You’re” is the contraction of “you” and “are,” so it is just a short, familiar way of saying “you are.”
Examples:
CORRECT: Sally, your fake eyelashes looked really awesome at the party.
INCORRECT: Sally, your a really fun person to bring to a party.
CORRECT: Fido, you’re such an annoying dog.
INCORRECT: You’re dog barks a lot.
A lot of people confuse these two words, so be sure that you aren’t one of them.
